Jesus says, \"As the Father as sent me, even so I am sending you.\" (John 20:21) Jesus sends his church into the world. From the church, specially called missionaries are sent to the nations to take the gospel there. Certainly, that is a proper understanding of sending, right? True enough in the basic sense that there are people who will cross physical and cultural boundaries for the sake of the Gospel. Not every Christ-follower leaves his or her hometown for a foreign country. But every Christian is sent.

All Christians are called out of the world and sent back in. That is what it means to be part of Jesus’ church. Understood in this way, every Christian is just as sent as the next. Every Christian is on mission whether in his hometown or in another part of the world.

Avery Willis wrote in On Mission with God that in every vocation he had—from salesperson to full-time international Christian worker to pastor to author—he was on mission. “When was I most on mission with God? Actually, in every case.” He did not distinguish between a full-time Christian worker and a salesman. He saw himself as being on mission in each and every facet of his life.
